This is my first time in Japan, and honestly, it felt like a dream come true. I’ve been wanting to come here for years, so stepping off the plane and realizing I’m here, I didn’t feel real at first, it still kinda doesn’t. I’ve traveled before, sometimes solo, sometimes with family, or from place to place where I have family waiting, but this trip was completely different. It was my first real solo trip with no family nearby, just me figuring out things on my own in the country. I’ve loved from afar for so long.
One of my best choices I made was doing a homestay. At first, I was honestly a little scared; the idea of living with a family I didn’t know was intimidating. But now, I’m so happy I went for it. I feel like I’m a part of the family. They’re such amazing, kind people, and staying with them has given me the chance to explore places in Japan I would never have known about or gotten to see on my own. They’ve shown me local spots and little hidden gems that made this whole experience even more special.
Another highlight for me was getting to explore Osaka by myself. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do for a long time. Walking through busy streets, trying all kinds of food, shopping, and just wandering around with no real plan felt so freeing. I plan on going again with some friends I met during my program.
School here has been amazing too. The classes are honestly so fun and interactive, it doesn’t even feel like school sometimes because we’re always doing hands-on activities and having interesting discussions. We also get a lot of free time, especially on weekends, Wednesdays and Fridays. Fridays and Wednesdays are usually extracurricular activities, and it’s kind of like field trips. On Wednesday’s game night, picnics and stuff like that. And on Friday, you get to go to places you’ve signed up for, they’re kinda like field trips. I visited places like Uji and Nara and so many shrines, gardens and temples, each one more beautiful than the last.
I’ve always loved learning about different cultures, trying new foods, watching traditional dances, and just experiencing daily life in new places. This trip has given me all of that and more. I enjoyed getting to know my classmates. I feel like I’ve made friends for life. This was an amazing experience, and I would recommend every college student try it at least once in their lives.
I also wanted to share a few pictures of my experience, moments that remind me just how lucky I am to be living this dream. I can’t wait to see what else is waiting for me here.
