Finding My Path Through Study Abroad:
I had never considered studying abroad before. It was something that always felt out of reach. I knew people who had done it, but I didn’t think it was something I could afford or even imagine for myself. That changed when I joined the Global Scholars Program at UW Bothell.
Through Global Scholars, I began to see myself differently and learn new things about myself. We learned what it meant to be a “global citizen” and were encouraged to participate in either a local or an international experience. While many of my peers joined faculty-led study abroad programs, like the one to Thailand, my own experience stayed local. I served on the board for NWFASA (Northwest Filipino American Student Alliance), which brought together Filipino clubs and organizations across the Pacific Northwest.

When my cohort gathered again in the fall to share our experiences, I couldn’t help but feel a little envious. Hearing my peers talk about their travels sparked something in me. I wanted to study abroad too. For the first time, I felt confident enough to pursue this goal.
My experience in UW Bothell’s 2023-2024 Global Scholars program enhanced my leadership skills and encouraged me to critically reflect on global issues, diversity, and identity. The program helped me gain new insights about myself and others. It allowed me to collaborate with a diverse and close-knit cohort, where we examined and discussed important issues that are often overlooked.
My time with Global Scholars was a period of personal growth, as I developed skills to navigate a world filled with complex intersectionality’s. I aimed to apply what I learned in the Global Scholars program to a future study abroad opportunity, and that dream became a reality when I joined the UWB Japan: World War II Through Film program in early Fall 2024.

Preparing for the Journey
For me, the hardest part of studying abroad came before the trip even began. I had to apply for scholarships and prepare myself academically and personally. At the time, I wasn’t in my major yet and was struggling with grades and motivation. But having a clear goal of studying abroad in Japan, gave me a sense of purpose and direction.
I worked on improving my academics, declared my major in Media and Communications, started working and saving money, and even practiced some basic Japanese phrases. Along the way, I leaned on the support of the Office of Connected Learning, Global Scholars staff, students, and mentors who encouraged me and provided me with valuable resources and advice.
One of my favorite experiences before going abroad was serving as an ambassador for visiting students from Kanda University. They stayed at UWB for about a month and welcoming them and spending time together motivated me even more. I couldn’t wait to see them again and was so excited to spend time with them in Japan as well. I felt like I had already created a community there. This experience gave me a glimpse of what cross-cultural exchange could feel like and further inspired me to study abroad, showing me that I could thrive in a global community.

Studying Abroad in Japan
When I finally started the UWB Japan: World War II Through Film program, it was my first time traveling to Asia and it was truly a life-changing experience. The program allowed me to explore Japan’s history and culture through films and documentaries, blending storytelling, reflection, and real-life experiences. We visited several important museums and sites, including the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which left a lasting impression on me.
Beyond academics, I had the chance to practice Japanese, immerse myself in the culture, and form meaningful friendships that made Japan feel like a second home. One of my most special moments was reuniting with the Kanda University students I had met back at UWB. They warmly welcomed me, gave me a tour of their campus in Chiba, and even showed me around Tokyo, sharing their favorite local spots. Being able to see my Kanda friends again felt like a full-circle moment and reminded me how much I had grown since starting my journey abroad.

Continuing the Journey
Now, as I’m preparing to graduate, I already find myself planning to return to Japan. My career path is still taking shape, but I can clearly see myself visiting again, working internationally, or continuing to build the community I started there.
Although I wasn’t able to go to Japan this year, I served as a FIUTS Kanda Ambassador again this past summer. Connecting with the new group of Kanda students reignited my dream of going back to Japan and reminded me why I fell in love with cross-cultural exchange. I hope to see my Kanda friends again one day, both those I met during my time abroad and the new students I connected with this year. In the meantime, I’ve been studying Japanese more seriously and staying in touch with my friends abroad.

Looking Back
Studying abroad was more than just a trip; it gave me direction, motivation, and confidence in myself. I went from someone who thought studying abroad was impossible to someone who is already planning their next journey overseas.
If you’re on the fence about studying abroad, the hardest part is taking that first step. Once you do, you’ll find support, resources, and a community that believes in you. Like me, you might discover a new passion, a new purpose, or even a new place to call home.
