From daydreams to reality, my journey to South Korea was a rollercoaster of emotions, culture, and life-changing experiences. I had always dreamt of studying abroad, and South Korea’s unique blend of culture, cuisine, and language had captivated me for years. So, when I finally got the chance to participate in an eight-week internship through the CIEE program in Seoul, I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation.
Stepping onto that plane, I was well aware that I was part of the first-ever cohort for this program. The uncertainty was palpable, but I was ready for the adventure that awaited me.
My internship at GenG, a prominent esports company in Korea, was a dream come true. I was plunged headfirst into the world of competitive gaming, working alongside professionals who shared my passion. I transitioned from being a mere observer to actively contributing to marketing projects and curriculum development for esports education.
Beyond the office, Korea had so much to offer. Museums allowed me to dive deep into the nation’s history and glimpse its promising future. The world of Korean pop culture was a delightful culture shock, and the bustling streets of Seoul turned into my playground, each corner holding a new discovery.
But it wasn’t just the places; it was the people who made this journey unforgettable. My cohort quickly became my second family, sharing not only laughter but also the challenges and triumphs of our adventure. These friendships would stay with me for life.
The concept of “jeong” – Korean hospitality – became a reality in my daily life. The warmth of strangers and their eagerness to share their traditions made me feel truly welcomed. Despite language barriers, genuine connections were formed, showing that communication goes beyond words.
Weekends were filled with new adventures, from hiking picturesque mountains to savoring street food delicacies. Palaces, temples, and markets offered a window into Korea’s rich and diverse culture.
Language, which initially seemed like a daunting barrier, turned into a bridge connecting me with locals. My limited Korean vocabulary was enough for authentic exchanges and heartfelt laughter.
As my internship continued, I had the chance to experience the natural beauty of South Korea, from the delicate cherry blossoms of spring to the fiery foliage of autumn. This stunning backdrop mirrored the warmth and hospitality of the people.
My journey from dreamer to intern was not without its challenges, but it was a testament to determination and the courage to step outside my comfort zone. Korea welcomed me with open arms, and I left with unforgettable memories and a piece of its culture in my heart.
Join me as I relive the moments, share the lessons, and reflect on my life-changing journey from dreamer to intern in the heart of Seoul. My story is a reminder that, with determination and an open heart, anyone can turn their dreams of exploration into a captivating reality.
